Welcome to Pleasantspot! Dreamer, round 1

Darren's got a lot of things to worry about, and a creative block is only one of them.

It's not just the single dad and dead wife thing getting Darren down some mornings. It's the whole the bills are overdue and stacking up on the coffee table thing. The Dirk's dating a "bad girl" and the "great, I'm falling for the only friend who was there for me after Darleen died" thing.

But Darren's making it work.

At least, he's trying to. He's trying to respect that Cassie's made a decision about Don Lothario, and he's kept his mouth shut. He's filling up his free time by spending it with his son, and maybe it's the first time he and Dirk have ever been this close.

It's starting to get better, even if missing Darleen still hurts. Dirk has dreams and ideas, and his son doesn't know it, but he inspires Darren, too. He doesn't know if he would have picked himself up one morning and applied for that illustrator job if it hadn't been for Dirk
.

He's got a career now, ideas and dreams of his own. An art studio maybe, where he can give classes. Maybe even meet someone new, move on from Cassandra...

But that doesn't seem to be going too well. Darren's art on the other hand?

It's coming back to him. He and Dirk might still be adjusting to the whole single parent thing

but at least Darren's back on his feet, and Dirk is doing better since Darleen.

Sometimes Darren thinks there was something Dirk wanted to talk about near the end of summer, but whatever happened seems to be lifting from Dirk's shoulders as his first days at Pleasant Prep, schoolwork, and new friendships take over. Not even Lilith has come by lately. He guesses Dirk will talk about it when he's ready.
Until then, Darren's got Cassandra's wedding invitation to think about, and the family portrait Mortimer commissioned to finish. The Goth wedding is sure to be the event of the season, and everyone's talking about it. There's a rumor even Rich Mann's been invited. So Darren spends the first night of fall working hard on his commission. With Dirk out with Dustin, he's got the house to himself, and is surprised when he's interrupted by a knock at the door.

"Cass? Everything okay? It's late."
"I know, I'm sorry. I just...needed to clear my head. Can we talk?"
"Always."
"Good."

"That wasn't talking."
Cassandra laughs, her cheeks pink. "I think you understood me perfectly."
"What are we going to do?"
"I...I don't know."
"That's okay. I got time."
"Darren..."
"Don't overthink it right now."
"I should go."
"You can stay."
"Dirk will be home soon. He can't see us like this."

"Can I see you again? Like this?"
"...Yes. But for now I have to go. I'll talk to you soon."

Soon can't seem to come soon enough as the day to Cassandra's and Don's wedding creeps closer and closer.
"Dad! I'm gonna go out and work on the car. You comin'?"
"Yep. Just one second."
